Shelter

90

Hands as shelter. This frame does not speak of the body as an object — it speaks of a gesture of protection, of an instinct that needs no explanation. Light falls softly, without judgment, revealing what is intimate but not private: the need to feel safe in one’s own skin, to protect oneself, to find refuge within. The analog grain makes this closeness tangible.

SHELTER — black and white analog photography on the gesture of protection

Black and white analog photography SHELTER speaks of hands as shelter. This frame does not testify to the body as object — it testifies to a gesture of protection, an instinct that requires no explanation. Handmade gelatin silver print on Ilford Multigrade FB paper, copy 1/10 from the limited edition.

About the photograph

Light falls softly, without judgement, revealing what is intimate, not merely private: the universal need to feel safe in our own skin, to take care of ourselves and find peace within. SHELTER does not seek a viewer — it allows the subject to exist without one.

The title points to something deeper than physical protection. The shelter we create with our own hands is a psychological space, a gesture each of us makes instinctively — around the heart, around the face, around the thinnest parts of ourselves. This black and white analog photography records that with respect, without interpretation.

The analog process as essence

Here, black-and-white photography is not a stylistic decision but a necessity. By removing color, only pure emotion and texture remain. The natural analog grain makes this closeness tangible, while Ilford Multigrade FB (Fiber Base) paper records the transitions between light and shadow with a depth that remains beyond the reach of the digital medium.

Skin and hands gain a volume that can almost be felt under the fingers. Each of the ten copies in this series is a unique work. They are printed by hand, one at a time, in the silence of my darkroom, with full devotion to every tone and detail.

A certificate of authenticity is provided with every print.

SILVER GELATIN PRINT

The photograph is handcrafted in a traditional darkroom, hand-exposed and developed on premium Ilford Multigrade Fiber-Based (FB) or RC paper. Using classic silver halide chemistry, this authentic analog process guarantees exquisite tonal gradations, deep archival blacks, and a museum-grade lifespan of over 100 years.

MUSEUM MATBOARD

Each artwork is hand-mounted in an acid-free museum matboard in an off-white shade. With a precise 45° bevel cut, the matboard isolates the photograph from the glass, creates a captivating gallery depth, and protects it for generations.

03 /

BACKING BOARD

The back of the artwork is secured with a rigid, pH-neutral barrier board. This backing prevents the cotton paper from rippling and warping over the years, ensuring the print remains perfectly flat within its frame.
